I am always looking for ways to create better characters. Most of the time it feels like my successful characters are an accident. I don’t really know how I got where I wanted to get. For the last couple years I’ve been piecing together a character design process from what I could learn online. I’ve even written a couple posts about my process. (Princess Cupcake, and Crowe) One of my favorite online sources for learning about character design is the character design blog.
Recently I found the book called Creating Characters with Personality by Tom Bancroft.
It’s great. I feel like a lot of the pieces I’ve had in my mind on the subject were kinda scattered, but after reading the book and trying to apply it as I create characters the pieces have come together into something I can use. Creating great characters is still a struggle (and probably always will be) but now I feel like I know which direction to struggle in.
Tom Bancroft explains clearly some of the basic steps to take when creating a character. Now when I am in the middle of a creating a character I can refer to this book for ideas. It’s not really a step by step process but it does help me know which steps I can take to bring my characters up to the next level.
So if creating characters something you’ve been wanting to learn more about I highly recommend it. Click this link to find it on Amazon –> Creating Characters with Personality: For Film, TV, Animation, Video Games, and Graphic Novels
