On October 25th Rena B asked me:
“What gives you the biggest inspiration for art? Or do you just imagine things and they come to mind or is everything just innate?”
Life is the biggest inspiration for my art.
Life is the short answer but it might not be very helpful. So I’ll give you some other examples.
“Girl’s night out” the illustration on the left is an example of an image that is inspired from my life. One of my friends came to town so the three of us got together for dinner and some chit chat. We had a lot of fun until the restaurant was closing and we had to leave. A few weeks later I was thinking of that memory and got the idea for this illustration.
Another way to be inspired by life
The illustration on the right was inspired by a movie I was watching. One scene had a shot similar to this illustration. There was a tree in the middle, buildings around the outside, something in the tree and a person with a bike looking up. My story is different, the characters are different, the colors and lighting are different, my composition is vertical, but everything else is pretty much ripped off from the movie. The scene inspired me but everything else had to come from life experience. Turning off the Noise
I get inspiration more often when I turn off the noise and give my brain room to think. For some reason this is hard. Audiobooks and Netflix are so fun to have on while I’m working. But if I keep it off, even for a little bit, it’s easier to create characters, compositions, and lighting that FEEL like they are supposed to. That’s what we want isn’t it? To create art that evokes an emotion.
If you are listening to a book, or watching a movie, or even listening to music while you create, and if the book or movie or music any good is going to evoke an emotion in you. How can you then feel another different emotion at the exact same time and put it into your art?
Where do you get your inspiration from?
