For years and years I’ve been working on a manuscript and book dummy for a book about giant broccoli. The project has gone through many stages but after more than 50 drafts I’m feeling pretty good about the manuscript. That means I’ve been able to really jump into the illustration. I have only a few weeks before It will be time to start illustrating Just in Time book 4 so I’m going to try to have this book all dummied, and ready for submission before then. We’ll see if I can do it. It’s alot of work.
I spent most of december working on character design ideas and I have piles of drawings. I’ll share a few with you.
The main character started out as this little guy. I did a lot of sketches of him and liked this version. Later I realized all the characters in the story are boys so I changed Nicco to Nella.
Here are some of the drawings I did of her. The new star of the book.
I also did a little sculpture of her. I hope I have time to sculpt all the characters because I had a lot of fun with this one. I also learned a lot and can’t wait to try my hand at it again.
Here is an early drawing of the baker and a more finished version of him.
And an early Butcher drawing and some more finished versions of him.
Here are some early sketches of the broccoli tree, and Nella’s italian greyhound.
Earlier this week I finished the thumbnail drawings for the book. I started out drawing them on the computer until my wacom pen broke. Another is on it’s way to me but I had to finished the drawings by hand.
That is what I’ve been up to. What about you?
